We’ve discussed in the past how conferencing has a variety jlabs_sf_6320-p_0.jpgof uses in different industries. Recently we discovered how video conferencing is breaking through in the medical field in nursing homes. Outside of virtual appointments with doctors and patients, we’re also seeing conferencing used for educational purposes in hospitals, sharing of research and for new developments in medicines.

The University of Alberta has implemented a new solution in their institution to test these new communication technologies called JLABS POD. Their main use is to connect to Johnson & Johnson Innovation networks around the world but the systems also enable the users to participate in video conferences for a variety of uses. The state-of-the-art system provides users with high quality video, secure lines and intuitive cameras for ease of use. The room is found in the university’s Katz Building.

Faculty now have the ability to communicate with experts in the field for mentorship. This kind of communication strengthens the learning and opens the door for more minds to solve challenges. Research and treatment can be discussed between faculty and outside experts in an easier platform with the new solution.

The university is also seeing professors find value in the new technology when it comes to product development. Their associate professor on oncology has plans to use the solution to connect his ideas on cancer treatments with experts in product development. This collaboration leads to faster information transfer from labs to developers which can lead to life saving treatments hitting shelves more quickly. Professors can present their research in a much easier way and allows to them to receive live feedback. Where the professor’s strengths lie in research, he does not have a history of developing products from it. As part of a formal mentorship program, they have access to bring in regulatory experts or even venture capital funders. The collaboration with developers and experts can lead to new ideas, new ways of testing medicines and ultimately better care for sick patients.

This unique experience is really only possible with video conferencing. With new developments in conferencing technology we’re seeing it used in more and more scenarios which is leading to amazing outcomes. This conferencing solution is doing more than just connecting researchers and experts together, it’s potentially changing and elevating the effectiveness of research, medicine and ultimately our care.
